A year since Peel Group initiated a strategic review leading to the closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher has spoken out against Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones and South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard. Fletcher criticised the mayors’ handling of the airport’s closure and their reluctance to utilise their devolved powers to save the strategic asset.
In a post on Thursday, July 13, Fletcher thanked the public for their support in his efforts to reopen the airport. He highlighted the strong backing he received from both Doncaster and the wider region, evident in a petition he promoted, which amassed over 100,000 signatures. Although lacking executive powers as an MP, Fletcher emphasised the strength of his voice, derived from the public’s unwavering support.
Fletcher criticised the mayors for choosing to rely on the national government to act on the airport’s situation, neglecting their own devolved powers. He urged them to take responsibility and find a solution, and even proposed that they hand their powers back to the government if necessary.
However, Fletcher claimed that the mayors attempted to silence him and limit his criticisms, a stance he vehemently rejected. Holding the mayors accountable for their actions and decisions regarding the airport, Fletcher insisted that they should be held to the fire until the airport is reopened and thriving.
The MP highlighted the mayors’ failure to provide financial support to the airport as a major factor contributing to its closure. Allegedly turning down a £20 million share of the airport and refusing a £20 million loan, the mayors’ decisions were minutely documented. Fletcher questioned why the Mayor of Doncaster delayed the Compulsory Purchase Order process, which may have affected the outcome if initiated earlier.
Moreover, Fletcher questioned the timing of financial aid offered by South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard to Doncaster Mayor, asking why this support wasn’t provided before the airport’s closure, despite having the same powers.
Despite the political divide between the two mayors and himself, Fletcher emphasised that his motivations were solely focused on saving the airport, and he hoped to be included in the decision-making process to contribute his expertise.
The closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, a strategic asset for the region, has raised questions about leadership, commitment, and the utilisation of devolved powers. Fletcher’s call for accountability resonates with the local community, who eagerly await answers about the loss of the airport and hope for a brighter future.
