In a significant development, the landscape of Doncaster’s Thorne town is set to undergo a transformation as the last remaining bank, a branch of Halifax situated at 7-7A Market Place, prepares to shutter its doors on April 8, 2024. The decision follows insights from business leaders suggesting a decline in usage that renders the facility no longer sustainable.
A spokesperson from Halifax offered insights into the rationale behind this closure decision: “Whenever we take the step of closing a branch, we undertake a comprehensive impact analysis. This encompasses several key factors:
- Customer Banking Preferences: An examination of how customers opt to engage with our banking services.
- Frequency of Branch Utilisation: An evaluation of the branch’s footfall and its evolving trends, considering data spanning from the previous year up to March 2023, as well as trends over the past four years.
- Current Services and Operating Hours: An overview of the services currently provided by the branch, alongside its operational timings.
- Exploration of Alternative Banking Channels: A meticulous assessment of alternative banking avenues, including their accessibility and proximity – this investigation culminates in an on-site visit.
- Public Transport Assessment: Evaluation of the availability and frequency of public transportation options.
- Broadband Accessibility Assessment: An overview of broadband availability.
- Impact on Customers: A consideration of the repercussions for customers, particularly those who may be vulnerable or necessitate additional support.
- External Evaluation by LINK: Sharing of closure plans with LINK, who, on behalf of the Cash Action Group, have independently evaluated the local community’s access to cash requirements.”
The spokesperson underscored Halifax’s commitment to adapting to the evolving needs of its customers, emphasising the importance of continuous review of their branch network.
Customers impacted by this change will retain the option to conduct their banking activities online or at Post Offices. To identify the most convenient alternative branch and its operational hours, individuals can refer to halifax.co.uk/branchfinder.
Halifax has already executed the closure of several branches this year, with additional closures slated for 2024. The evolving banking landscape reflects the broader shift in consumer preferences and technological advancements, impacting how banking services are accessed and utilised.
