Mayor Ros Jones has shared a new update on efforts to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), formerly known as Robin Hood Airport, which ceased operations in September 2022. The airport, located in Finningley near Doncaster, opened in 2005 and served as one of Yorkshire’s two international commercial airports alongside Leeds Bradford.
In an address to full council, Mayor Jones reaffirmed her commitment to reopening the airport, emphasising that significant progress is being made in securing a new operator. “As per plan, we are continuing with our due diligence, legal process, and financial checks including Public Subsidy controls,” Jones stated. She added that the unexpected timing of the general election had slightly delayed progress as new ministers required briefings.
Jones also highlighted the critical importance of retaining Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s airspace. A Statement of Need has been submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which will soon be publicly available. “I cannot emphasise enough the importance of retaining our airspace,” she said, noting that local MPs remain engaged with the Aviation Minister on the issue.
The airport has a long history, dating back to its military use during both World Wars. Since opening to travellers in 2005, it saw rapid growth, handling 899,000 passengers in its first year and 2.28 million by 2007. However, in June 2022, Wizz Air announced the termination of most flights, a significant blow to the airport’s operations, which eventually led to its closure in September.
The search for a new operator has reached its final stages of due diligence, and the council continues to hold regular meetings with investors, airlines, and businesses to secure the future of the airport. Jones reassured residents, councillors, and businesses that she would continue to keep them updated on the progress. “This final phase is about pulling it all together,” she said.
The reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport would restore a critical transport hub for the region, allowing passengers to once again fly from one of the region’s major gateways. The Mayor expressed optimism, saying, “We work to see planes flying from Doncaster once again. Thank you.”
